Most pharmaceutical companies separate research and development from sales and marketing. Not at Johnson & Johnson’s Building 185. The building holds both testing laboratories and non-research functions such as sales and marketing, quality control offices, and regulatory departments - all in one location. The proximity of these departments facilitates communication and accelerates the movement of products from research and development through to marketing. Francis Cauffman’s open plan divides each floor into “neighborhoods” and encourages direct interaction between laboratory researchers and employees in other departments. Light courts and large windows bring sunlight into the offices areas and labs.
