Environments for Research and Innovation

Concept

The nature of scientific research demands the mastering of a huge body of knowledge before approaching the edge of the known, before entering the territory of the new and the realm of innovation.

This ëburden of knowledgeí has resulted in two ongoing trends. Individual researchers have become increasingly specialized in their knowledge, and research teams have grown ever larger, bringing together specialists of diverse disciplines.

There is a great advantage to facilities that encourage the interaction of these specialists, facilities that foster the opportunities for chance encounters. Laboratory spaces need to be readily adaptable to special needs, able to flex and grow over time as these needs change.

As important as team efforts are in research, it is important to also create environments that support the needs of the individual, for it is still often individual thought that sparks the germ of a new idea.
