Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Steve and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York

North Shore-LIJ faced a challenging task: build a temporary pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) in 20 months that later, with minimal change and construction, could become a Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (BMT). Francis Cauffman’s design for the temporary PICU allowed the hospital staff to use the space as a live “mock-up,” which gave them an opportunity to decide, based on experience, which layout worked best. To easily convert the space from a PICU to a BMT, the patient rooms are already set up with the needs of a BMT. Just one wall near the nurse’s station will need to be removed in order to transform the whole department.
