Atlantic Health acquired Chilton Medical Center in 2014 and undertook a study to respond to the community's need for a state-of-the-art hospital. FCA was selected to re-image the campus and update the emergency department that included 17,000 SF of reconstruction and a new pediatric hybrid unit, combining in-patient pediatric rooms and emergency services into one convenient location.

In addition, a new non-invasive cardiovascular suite was relocated in Phase 1 to accommodate the pediatric hybrid unit. The final phase will incorporate modifications to the existing adult emergency department to utilize the latest technology and clinical treatment processes for a streamlined patient experience. The team also created a series of dominoes to be moved in preparation for construction enabling the emergency department to remain operational during the renovation.

The design provides access to natural light, including the reuse of an existing skylight. A new roof skylight will be added to the new in-patient rooms, reinforcing the
link between natural light and the healing environment. The existing octagonal skylights inspired the interior design concept of angling and layering creating a rhythm of tension and decompression highlighting important wayfinding nodes within the suite.

The color branding, consistent with the Atlantic Health image, utilizes intentional pops of color sparingly to highlight patient focal points. The new pediatric hybrid unit will have 4 in-patient beds, 7 emergency department treatment sites, isolation and secured holding rooms, and public family support spaces.
