Engineering and Science University Magnet School

K-12 Education Connecticut
Referred to as the most technologically-advanced school in the district, ESUMS fosters an educational partnership with the University of New Haven defining a unique and innovative model for hands-on teaching of engineering and science.

Launched with a visionary public/private partnership between two municipalities and a University, the vision was to build a progressive 21st century STEM education facility as a pipeline for middle and high school students into higher education and future careers in the state’s science and technology economy.

Design elements were envisioned for supporting collaborative work which students will one day experience in the workplace. The premiere engineering classrooms are a combination of workshop and art classroom ideal for the hands-on building and prototyping projects students engage in as they master engineering principles. The end classrooms open onto widened corridors with operable glass walls providing a gathering space for grade-level convocations each Friday morning. Every aspect of the school works to inspire learning. Sculptures of famous inventors from the area emerge from the brickwork. Hypatia, 4th century mathematician, supports the entry canopy.
