The Northwell Healthcare System renovation project included redesign existing space into 8 private PICU rooms at the Cohen Children’s Medical Center. The rooms were designed with size and capability to accommodate ECMO and other critical care services and technologies, as well as to provide live testing of equipment medical booms for future projects.
Patient and family centered care is important to the health system. Family spaces were provided within the unit that allows parents to still be close. The patient’s rooms were also sized to accommodate parents sleeping overnight. The project included all support spaces for the unit, Respiratory Storage, a central nurse station and decentralized nurse sub-stations. The goal was to be able to deliver critical area in a bright, supportive environment for families and for all ages of pediatric patients.
