The new ICU at Southside hospital incorporates the latest ideas in patient centered care. The overall footprint of the rooms are sized to allow for care givers to sleep in the rooms. This proximity of the patients’ family members allows them to be a more integral part of the treatment and recovery process. They are more able to be advocates for the patients if they feel welcomed within the spaces.
The technology in the patient rooms was designed with maximum flexibility. By locating medical gases and procedure lights on the articulating booms, allows the equipment and devices be brought to the patient at the treatment site. The unit also provides separate amenity spaces such as lounges and respite space for the families to take a moment to reflect, make phone calls or just keep in touch with family members without disturbing the patient.
